Online Assessments

In Maine, my school piloted a program that integrated professional development and assessments (both formative and summative) of high school reading comprehension and writing. It was the best thing to happen to my classroom.

The Professional Development piece, FineTune, helped me to better assess student writing. As a result when I used the summative assessments of Assessment21, I could focus on how my students were doing to analyze passages while the program kept track of the reading comprehension performance. Saved me time while helping to truly focus on instruction.

  1. Do you mean online application of state standardizes testing? Or, more generally, teachers using software for quizes and paper submissions?

Here is a link to the website that we used for online formative and summative assessments. These are classroom based. http://academicmerit.com/index.php

You can read the results of the use in Maine schools here:

  3. I have been following Dr. Chris Dede and his projects that have embedded assessements. I think that this is the way to go. Here is the link. There are lots of resources on the page at the Rennie Center. http://renniecenter.issuelab.org/research/listing/road_ahead_for_state_assessments

  4. Do you think this would be consistent with the PARCC or SBAC assessments?

    1. I had a very encouraging demo with the School Relations person at AcademicMerit. She and everyone working there has been a teacher. So, she totally "got" where I was coming from.

She claims that they have gotten lots of feedback that their design is similar to the assessments that are coming... In my case, it'll be SBAC.

They have documents on their alignment to Common Core on their website.

I'll let you know how it goes.
