Since change is difficult, and many schools do not have the resources, nor do all teachers have the training or the confidence to incorporate technology in their classrooms, why not choose JUST FIVE Web tools or tech software resources every school must have NOW! For example, we have established that all American schools have at least one or more computers because our society entered the digital age decades ago. Education ...more »
There are thousands of free online educational tools, but teachers do not have the time to find them all. I created this website to connect teachers with free, kid-safe educational tools: http://edutechdatabase.wikispaces.com/
The tools are categorized by grade level, subject, and standards.
Explanation and reflections on this project may be found at: http://www.guide2digitallearning.com/blog_jon_orech/digital_citizenship_reflections
How do we meet the needs of Americans who can't or won't attend school as a place? Illness, frequent relocation, emotional issues, poverty, addiction, age; there are so many barriers to learning when access to education is reserved for those who can be in certain buildings at specific times. Asynchronous distance learning may be the answer. Migrant students would have a stable sequential experience, high school students ...more »
By creating labs in a virtual world, we can open access to students who must take courses online. By offering synchronous instruction, even distance students get a complete lab experience in which they can interact with their instructor and classmates. Our community college is doing this successfully.
I have been using this app for formative assessment in my class, PICK ME! I have been terrible at randomizing my student participation and getting ALL students involved. I started using this app that randomly selects the student for me. Then I can record whether or not the student got the answer correct or incorrect. It's great because I can share that info with their parents with one click, via email. If you struggle ...more »
A national Learning Management System (LMS) that schools can employ/deploy as their school website. Using a universal LMS would allow developers to create modules that schools could include locally. Having a system like this would allow for a learning repository. The repository would contain lessons, media, tools, materials and ideas bundled into a Learning Block. The Learning Blocks would be evaluated and tested by teachers. ...more »
This 4 island virtual environment lets students not just learn about history, but to get a minds eye view of it using avatars and digitally recreated historical landmarks and simulations. We have created an Understanding the Holocaust area where students can walk the streets of Amsterdam in 1944 and interact with the area and get a tour of the Secret Annex, detailed in Anne Frank's heartwrenching diary. A compliment to Brick and Mortar education, where virtual classrooms and satellite campus allow for equitable education throughout entire regions. Students use 1:1 technology to enter "Learning Hot-Spots" that allow for virtual face time classes, online curriculum, and assisted lab/testing environments so students can create, participate in, and graduate from a program that gears them towards success in post secondary ...more »
Typical vocabulary building begins with looking up words in the dictionary for their meanings, and this approach was used initially with the project, DA_SCI7_RYSS by having the students go online and look up the definitions for their Grade 7 Science words to begin to have an understanding. Retention of this understanding was the important component of the project, and a second approach was used by having the students ...more »

Create a website interface where students in all parts of the country can discuss, question, and introduce ideas based on science and math in the everyday world. Many students think that science and math education ends where the walls of the classroom meet. This would create a virtual community of student STEMiticians discussing ideas about the world that is happening around them daily. Many students never see things ...more »
The Need To Transform K-12 Education As President Obama recently told Congress and the American people, "In a global economy where the most valuable skill you can sell is your knowledge, a good education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity -- it is a prerequisite. Today, three-quarters of the fastest-growing occupations require more than a high school diploma. And yet, just over half of our citizens have that ...more »

I just helped write a grant through the MSET organization for money for a Mimio Teach Interactive System. It's an interactive whiteboard without the board. A magnetic bar is placed on any magnetic surface and comes with an interactive pen that works with your computer to make it function. I am excited to use it with my Geometry unit I'm about to begin. Through the software and learning community I've found plane and ...more »
