By creating labs in a virtual world, we can open access to students who must take courses online. By offering synchronous instruction, even distance students get a complete lab experience in which they can interact with their instructor and classmates. Our community college is doing this successfully.
This 4 island virtual environment lets students not just learn about history, but to get a minds eye view of it using avatars and digitally recreated historical landmarks and simulations. We have created an Understanding the Holocaust area where students can walk the streets of Amsterdam in 1944 and interact with the area and get a tour of the Secret Annex, detailed in Anne Frank's heartwrenching diary.
